If, like me, your heart sinks when you hear the words 'Christmas Market,' then fear not and continue reading because I've got tidings of comfort and joy for you. Puerto Portals, the upscale marina come shopping centre come restaurant haven just outside Palma is having its annual Christmas Market from December 20th to January 6th.
Now, the nice people at the port have had a lot of experience organising this event for quite a few years and this, coupled with dealing with a discerning clientele has made the event not only quite unique, but an unqualified success.
Their publicity for this years announces that;
Like every year, our traditional Christmas Market floods the port boulevard with Christmas scents, flavours and sensations, and is wrapped in an authentic Christmas atmosphere.
It also has an extensive calendar of activities. The big star? The skating rink. You can also enjoy musical performances, children's workshops, circus schools, storytelling, Petit Cinema, concerts, family dancing, and much more!
Most importantly, the aspect that sets it apart from other Christmas Markets that just seem to have stall after stall of figures for cribs, tree baubles, and flashing fairy lights is the quality of the goods on sale.
All operating from 'Swiss chalet' style shops the artisans and craftsmen will be selling many of their own designs with many of them also made here in Mallorca. There's a tremendous range of beautiful, classy, and rather stylish things on offer which would make great presents for you, your family and friends, your dog, and your house! I reckon I could even find something that my wife – the woman who has everything – would like!
You can see a few of the products on my photo gallery (and a full list of retailers on Puerto Portals' webpage) which include alpaca shawls, hand made shoes, minimalist jewellery, clothes, bags, accessories, cushions, candles, men's clothes and everything your stylish dog could need. There's also lots of food, cakes, chocolates and gluhwein.
No wonder that this particular market has been chosen as one of the best five Christmas Markets in Europe by the German newspaper Die Welt – and let's face it, the Germans know a thing or two about Christmas!
Keep your eye on the website for the opening hours and a complete list of the musical entertainment planned over the festive period
Happy shopping everyone!
