The Marriage of Figaro
Palma's Principal Theatre kicks off its 32nd annual Opera Season with the biggest production it has ever staged – The Marriage of Figaro – and one it has never staged before! Mozart's comic opera arrives for three performances this week; 7th, 9th and 11th March, which will feature around 150 people!
As I said, it's a big production from the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville with an enormous set designed by Ezio Frigerio, musical direction by Yi-Chen Li from Taiwan, and fantastic costumes by Franca Squarciapino who holds an Oscar for the costume design on the film Cyrano de Bergerac!
It's a daunting prospect for the theatre as apart from its enormous stage it also features 11 soloists, 13 performers, 9 dancers, a 30 strong choir, 40 musicians from the Balearic Symphony Orchestra, plus stylists, make up artists, and other technical staff which bring up the numbers to around 150 in the production.
The Teatro Principal is a superb venue, quite intimate and with excellent acoustics and views from the many boxes in a semi-circle around the stage and is actually great value for money for this type of event. Tickets cost from only €10 up to €69 and can be bought online by clicking the link.
My personal tip is to get yourself acquainted with the plot of Mozart's work as it is sung in Italian, the translation in the theatre will be in Spanish and Catalan.
Enjoy your night at the opera if you go.
