Thousands to compete in the Palma de Mallorca Marathon
One of the biggest sporting events in the calendar takes place soon in Palma, under the strapline 'follow the sun' the Palma de Mallorca Marathon (PMM) takes place on Sunday 16th October starting at 09:00 precisely. The event draws thousands of competitors from all over Europe and the organisers are at pains to stress just how perfect Palma is for the race.
For the races themselves – marathon, half marathon and 10 km – the city and the routes around it take in miles of sea front, historic monuments and are mostly flat, whilst for off duty competitors there is plentiful accommodation, a great cultural offer and of course hundreds of bars and restaurants with a myriad choice of food and drink.
The base and start/finish point for the three races is the big Parque del Mar recreational space in front of the cathedral and in between the runners will pound the streets all the way down the seafront to the San Carlos military fort and a labyrinthine route around the old town area.
Past events have drawn thousands of competitors and spectators and this year is expected to be no different with categories for five different age groups in all three main races, Nordic walkers able to take part in the 10km, as well as side events like a kids' run and breakfast run on the days before the marathon.
