Gastro Mallorca: Bar d'es Mercat

A small bar with lots of character and low prices

For many of us the best reward of foreign travel is eating and drinking just like the locals do, particularly when the food is good, fresh and cheap. Well, tucked away in the corner of one of Palma's best markets, Santa Catalina, is the Bar d'es Mercat where good, fresh and cheap are the watchwords along with a good measure of gregarious hospitality and friendly service.

A favourite of the locals for many years, this little bar is conspicuously located right by all the fish stalls in the market, and the smells coming from the grill betray where most of their food comes from. OK a bar grilling fish and seafood isn't exactly unique in Mallorca, but the USP of this extremely popular eaterie is that its customers buy whatever they want to eat at the nearby stalls and the bar's expert grillmeisters cook it to perfection for a small fee!

Isn't that a great idea? You can buy fresh seasonal food nearby and watch it being cooked (and even better have your plates cleared up and washed after you've finished) together with some fine wines or beer, and all at low, low prices!

According to the market's website there's a host of seafood in season at the moment and you can choose from this list I've copied and pasted - Clams, Cockles, Bonita, Edible crab, shrimp, carp, Crab, Crayfish, Conger, Dorada, halibut, red Gamba, Gamba gray, Yellowtail, Liba, Mussels, Grouper, Nécora, Butterfish, Perch, Swordfish, Octopus, Oysters Salmon, Mullet, Sardine, Shark, Trout – which gives a great selection to sizzle to perfection on the grill.

Doesn't that sound great? If you're considering going, here's my tip, don't buy anything from the Arume sushi bar to put on the grill!
