Big golf travel market for Mallorca this year
Mallorca is cementing itself as one of the leading European golf destinations this year as a prestige event comes to town. It's the International Golf Travel Market which will be headquartered in the Son Termens (photo) golf club just north of Palma. The beautiful course (and rather swish clubhouse) will host 600 golf tourism supliers, 350 pre-qualified buyers and around 100 international press representatives who'll be flying in from all corners of the globe.
So it's a rather good opportunity to showcase what our fantastic island has to offer the golfing fraternity who by repute, have high acquisitive powers. There are 19 courses on Mallorca which form the Asociación de Campos de Golf de Mallorca and being on an island, they're all within easy reach of each other – 45 minutes is the maximum journey time you could ever make between courses!
Short journey time is also a factor when travelling to Mallorca itself, with flights able to connect a market of millions and millions of people in around 2 hours or less. Add to this the climate; 300 days of sunshine a year, excellent accommodation and gastronomy and you're onto a winner. No wonder tourists played around 600,000 rounds of golf last year with expectations of a 5% increase to 630,000 this year!
Not bad for an island whose first golf course, Son Vida, was built in 1964 (there was a nine hole in Alcudia in 1934 which closed in the Civil War) and eight of the courses have been built since the year 2000. In fact two of the courses, Alcanada and Son Gual, are considered amongst the top courses in the whole of Europe.
The IGTM takes place on November 14th to 17th and you can read more about it on their official website or if you fancy playing a round during the year, take a look at our golf section here on Mallorca Spotlight.
