Incredible athletes run the length of the Sierra Tramuntana mountains
It's the seventh annual 'Ultra Mallorca Serra de Tramuntana' running competition this weekend when around 3,200 athletes will be taking part in three gruelling races. This is a record for
participation in the event which lives up to its 'ultra' description right from the start when the first race covers the entire length of the Sierra Tramuntana mountain range on Mallorca's west
coast – a mere 112 km!
Not only is it an enormously long distance with lots of steep climbs and descents, but it also starts at midnight this Friday 17th April when the runners leave Andratx. The first to complete
the course are expected to arrive way up north in Pollensa at around 14:00 where a physiotherapy service will be waiting for them! Organisers have plenty of food and emergency stations along the
route with a supply of fluids, energy bars, fruit, nuts and the like to keep the athletes – 800 of them from 20 different countries - going.
Trail Mallorca, the second race with 2,100 runners starts in Valldemossa at 08:00 on Saturday 18th, and the third, Marathon Mallorca starts in Soller at 10:00. Covering 67 and 44 km
respectively both races also finish in Pollensa at about the same time as the Ultra run – what an incredible sight that will be.
Events like Ultra Mallorca certainly do add to the cachet and reputation of Mallorca as a great sporting, as well as holiday destination.
Look out for the runners if you're in the area this weekend.
