Hotel Sant Francesc opens

Another fabulous five star hotel opens in Palma de Mallorca

Back in December 2013 we ran an article about the proposed conversion of an old 19th century manor house on one of Palma's emblematic squares, the Plaza San Francisco, into a new hotel.

Well now it's open for business! The Sant Francesc Hotel Singular, belonging to the Majestic Group from Barcelona, opened last week, and what a splendid job they've made of the place.

I visited in February when the building was a dusty hive of activity, swarming with workmen eager to finish the project. Even then it was possible to see the care and attention given to preserving the old sandstone walls and French oak beams whilst giving the building a thoroughly modern makeover.

Back when it was built for the Alomar Femenia family, a house was a way of displaying wealth and style, and as you'll see from the magnificent lobby and enormous doors through to the inner garden courtyard, they succeeded.

The Sant Francesc is an ideal place for treating yourself on a special break in the city. It's centrally located at the side of the enormous monastery of the San Franciscan monks and from its rooftop bar, terrace and swimming pool has the most spectacular views of the cityscape – try it at sunset.

However, the striking thing about the hotel is the air of calm luxury pervading the place from the soothing décor of the rooms, suites and public areas to the quiet efficiency of the staff. As you'd expect it has all the top class facilities associated with its five stars, excellent restaurant, beautiful bar and courtyard garden which is open to the public, and to make it that little bit extra special, a permanent exhibition of contemporary art and photographs, specially commissioned, adorns its walls.

If you fancy a stay, perhaps to celebrate an anniversary, birthday or some special occasion, there are 42 rooms here in various categories which seem to get more spacious and luxurious (and obviously more expensive) as you go up the scale, but as young people say, YOLO, so why not treat yourself.
