Golf Son Gual Success

Mallorca's number one golf course moves up the world ratings

Probably the first thing you've seen when approaching Mallorca airport by plane is the lush, green pastures of the Son Gual golf course below. It's certainly one of the first, and last, stops for those on Mallorcan golfing holidays and its reputation just seems to grow and grow.

Golf World magazine has recently published its updated annual rankings for the World Top 100 Course in Continental Europe and placed Son Gual at 'numero uno' in Mallorca, eighth best in Spain and a move of two places up the ladder in the whole of Europe to number 42! Golf World's synopsis of the course was; “Tough, but aesthetically pleasing. Majorca's (sic) No1 is the epitome of a high-calibre modern championship course.”

Well, prestigious as this award may be, its true significance is revealed when you consider that Son Gual was just farmland until 2007! It was then that the dream of golf mad businessman Adam Pamer, who had a home on Mallorca, to build his own course was realised. Reputedly costing €30 million, the Thomas Himmel designed par 70 course has 800 mature olive trees, and (allegedly) the most dramatic closing hole in all Spain, the par five 18th!

The club's general manager Andreas Pamer is justifiably proud of the ranking and says, "It is part of our long-term plan to maintain and improve upon our rankings year on year, but, above all, our ethos is all about providing the best possible golfing experience for members, their guests and visitors. And this latest accolade suggests we're achieving that aim."
