Five consecutive nights of Jazz in North Mallorca
Yes, it really is the 21st year of the Sa Pobla Jazz Festival set in a little town which has drawn some of the biggest names in the genre over the years. This year the programme is headed by a Jazz 'supergroup,' Nettwork who will play on the first night of the festy, Tuesday 4th August, to get the proceedings off to a flying start.
Nettwork is the touring band of bass guitarist Charnett Moffett, hence the unusual tt spelling, which takes various forms and for this performance is a quartet. Moffett is a distinguished musician who has appeared on over 200 recordings as well as his own albums on the prestigious Blue Note label. His father Charles was Ornette Coleman's drummer, hence the young Moffett's moniker, an amalgam of Charles and Ornette.
He'll be joined by guitarist Stanley Jordan, famed for playing two tunes at the same time, who has performed in Mallorca before, drummer Jeff Tain Watts and Casimir Liberski on Piano. The programme then takes shape like this;
5th – Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca
6th – Californian guitarist Joe Louis Walker and his band play the Blues
7th – Playjazz group, ex students of Jimmy Weinstein's traveling Jazz school
8th – Big band concert by Jimmy Weinstein
All the concerts start at 22:30 in the town's main square, the Plaza Mayor, and the organisers are asking for a donation of €5 to help cover some of the costs. In addition to the music, there's also a Jazz themed photographic exhibition taking place from 20:00 each night for a couple of hours, and the town's restaurants are putting on special 'menjazz' menus for hungry fans.
If you fancy going along, you can find more details on an info sheet produced by the organisers.
