Big, luxury sailing yachts race from Palma de Mallorca
Starting today, 17th June until the 20th, Palma hosts the most important and prestigious regatta in the Mediterranean, and the second most important in the world, the Superyacht Cup Palma. As you can see from our headline, it's the 19th annual shindig, which also makes it one of the longest running events in the Med.
The races, which involve some of the finest looking sailing vessels you'll ever see, take place in the Bay of Palma and with 21 yachts competing, the view of them all under full sail will be a magnificent sight to behold. The sleek craft themselves, originate from 12 different specialist boatyards and range in size from 24 to 60 metres! Our photo, courtesy of Vitters shipyard, is their yacht Ganesha.
The international crews have come from Europe; Holland, Germany, Britain, and also The USA, and are all accustomed to competing at the highest level. However, once the daily competitions are over, the crews on 'shore leave' will be able to enjoy plenty of top level entertainment in a marquee at the Moll Vell HQ of the cup, where there'll be live music, and dancing courtesy of the good people at Pacha.
An important event it may be for the yachting fraternity, but it's as equally important to Mallorca itself as it once again places it firmly on the map of must see destinations for the nautical sector and enhances its reputation as a tourist destination. It's estimated that with around 1000 people involved with all the participating yachts, all staying in good hotels and eating in the best restaurants, that the economic impact of the four day event is about €4 million.
If you're around Palma over the next few days why not take a stroll down to the Moll Vell's new facilities with bars, restaurants and an observation deck, to gaze on the magnificent yachts setting off to race? Better still, treat yourself to lunch there, my tip is the super stylish Mar de Nudos restaurant, right by the sea, which has excellent food and special lunch menu which is great value for money.
For real nautical aficionados, the race 'village' is open to the public on Saturday 20th from 9:00 to 13:00. All the details of the races, start times, routes and entertainment can be found on the Superyacht Cup Palma website.
