One of my favourite hotels in Mallorca, the Aimia in Puerto Soller, is using modern NFC technology to give its clients a vast range of help, assistance and information at the swipe of a finger!
NFC means Near Field Communication and is a method by which smartphones establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into close proximity, usually no more than a few inches. This allows contactless transactions and data exchange between phones or a phone and an unpowered NFC chip, called a tag.
A printed panel with NFC tags, designed and managed by NFC and social media solutions provider GeoCrono, has been installed in the Aimia's reception so that guests can access information about public transport, places to visit and weather forecasts as well as downloadable maps, the hotel's WiFi password and its restaurant menu. As you can see on the photo, courtesy of NFC World, it's an easy system to operate, and for those without NFC phones, there are QR codes which link to the same information.
Not only is this quick and easy for guests, but it also frees up reception for its most important task of checking clients in and out!
The Aimia is one line back from the sea in Puerto Soller and is a magnificent example of what can be done to convert what was once a bog standard 70's hotel block into a comfortable, modern hotel for the 21st century. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there a couple of years ago and will certainly be returning to use its facilities ASAP – though I may have to buy one of these new fangled smart phones to make the most of it!
