Every now and then forgotten relics of the Civil War come to light, some more welcome than others! Last Sunday an old grenade was discovered in a country finca close to Consell, about 25 km from
Palma in central Mallorca.
Civil, whose photo we have used, sent along their explosives experts from the Gedex division to destroy the grenade harmlessly in a controlled explosion. The grenade itself was a mortar propelled
explosive used by the Republican forces in the civil war.
Developed by a Sr. Valero, the weapon was extensively used by the infantry as it was relatively light to carry and was folding, making it even more portable.
As the war dragged on and supplies of arms became more difficult to obtain, Republican forces resorted to manufacturing their own version of the 'Valero' in Catalonia.
Believe it or not, grenades exactly the same as this – though hopefully deactivated – can still be purchased on Ebay!
