Cycling Up in Palma

The use of the humble bicycle is on the up and up in Palma

The use of the humble bicycle is on the up and up in Palma these days. Surveys are done of bicycle usage on the 'Avenidas' bike lanes on a monthly basis and the results shown an incredible increase
in usage recently.

The council puts this down to various reasons, amongst them the new Bicipalma bike hire scheme and the weather. Whatever it is, there are almost double the number of cyclists using this stretch of
bike lane, a kind of 'inner ring road' around the city centre.

If you are travelling to Palma or staying in one of the nearby resorts, then hiring a bike is really easy, with many hire shops about, some right in Palma city centre. Add to this just over 43
kilometres of special bike lanes – they even have their own traffic lights – which cross and go round the city and getting about by bike is a real pleasure.

The council have a PDF map of all the bike lanes and as can be seen, it's easy to
cycle all along the sea front by the Paseo Maritimo all the way down to the resort of Playa de Palma – one of the most popular routes which seems to be full of cyclists, joggers, skaters and power
walkers nearly all day every day.

Give it a try, the views are fantastic, the air is clear and it's good for you!
