Works to connect Mallorca's electricity supply from the mainland were halted by police yesterday in the town of Sagunto on the Valencian coast. The giant undersea cable comes ashore there but the contractors working on the project were ordered off site as the building to be used for the purpose does not have the relevant permissions and licenses.

The Sagunto authorities want €8 million compensation for the adverse environmental impact of the project – they've been offered €600,000 – and say they won't grant the licenses until they get it.

The connection to the mainland grid is seen as vital to Mallorca to avoid the occasional massive power cuts which are sometimes suffered by the island.
