Great Mallorcan Railway Journeys

Mallorca is to be featured in the tremendously popular BBC TV programme Great Continental Railway Journeys.

Presented by the ex Conservative minister Michael Portillo, the series has been shown all over the world and is based on rail travel using George Bradshaw's railway guide from 1913.

Not only do rail buffs get to see plenty of loco footage, but lovers of history, culture and geography get to learn just how life was just before the world wide conflict of the Great War affected the whole of Europe.

Portillo, amiable presenter with a penchant for brightly coloured jackets, will be in  [michael portillo] Mallorca on the 5th and 6th of May to film scenes on the island's rail routes to Inca and Manacor. It's part of a programme showing a journey from Barcelona to Valencia and on to Mallorca, covering most of Spain's Mediterranean coastline where Portillo will feel quite at home as he is half Spanish, his father being a refugee from the Civil War.

A little earlier, the production company will be on the island filming scenes of both the railway itself and the beautiful rolling countryside of Mallorca's central plain on the 21stand 22nd of April – just in time to see the crops turning a beautiful golden colour in the spring sunshine.

Keep an eye out for it when the programme is shown in your region.
