With the Tokyo Olympics just over the starboard horizon in 2020 thousands of would be gold medallists are now planning to show their mettle in the big regattas which are regarded as qualifying events for the greatest competition of all.
Here in Mallorca the European competitive sailing circuit opens with the Trofeo Princesa Sofía IBEROSTAR from 30th March to 7th April. Highly regarded, the 2018 regatta will be the 49th on the bounce and will attract around 1000 sailors from some 50 nations to the Bay of Palma to try to qualify for Tokyo.
It will be an opportunity to measure both the teams' and individuals' performances before the upcoming World Sailing Championships to be held in Denmark so everyone will be pulling out all the stops on both sea and land this spring.
The venues for the regatta are the Club Nàutic S’Arenal which will host the Finn, 470 M & W, 49er and 49er FX classes, and the Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa in Can Pastilla for Laser, Laser Radial, RS:X M & W and Nacra 17 classes.
The racing actually starts on 2nd April and the Bay of Palma will be full of sail and lots of excitement with around 10 to 15 qualifying races per class and there'll be plenty of scenes like these in our photo slideshow courtesy of Jesus Renedo.
