Palma Marathon this weekend

Thousands of runners in Palma this weekend

Quite literally thousands of runners are now arriving in Palma to take part in three days of athletic activity culminating in the Palma Marathon on Sunday 18th October. Everything is centred on the Parque del Mar leisure area in the shadow of the mighty Gothic cathedral which becomes a marathon 'village' for the occasion.

Almost 7,000 runners from all over the world are now officially registered and it is still possible to participate in the event by turning up at the village with your running shoes. Under the strapline Follow the Sun, the three day fiesta has lots of activities for kids; fun runs and the like, and adults with pasta parties and guided tours of the city, leading up to race day.

Sunday sees three races; the marathon, half marathon and 10 km which all start between 9:00 and 9:30 in the Parque del Mar. The route is more or less the same for all races, with a long stretch all down the seafront Paseo Maritimo way past the ferry port to the Naval Base and a section round the city itself. The marathon runners do two circuits so there's plenty of opportunity for spectators to cheer them on.

During the race there are 'spectator centres' with entertainment, live music from rock bands and local folk dancing which can be found along the route at Pachá disco (Promenade), Plaza de Santa Eulalia, Plaza del Rey Juan Carlos I and Plaza Mayor.
